Businesses That Succeed in Recession

From this week's Business Week, their list of categories thriving in the recession. I've rearranged them starting with the ones I'd estimate would produce most revenue for us. In order to get a bigger picture, you must to go the article link. (See if you agree.)

  1. A Safe Business. People putting money in the safe instead of banks. Add to this the category called Atmos-Fear; the business of home security including alarms, fences, gates, video surveillance, etc. Look in the Yellow Pages. Largest vendors are ADT and GE.
  2. Detective Agencies. Looking for fraud and investigating worker's comp claims. Up 40% since last Fall.
  3. Pawnshops. Go see www.nationalpawnbrokers.org. No surprise. Stations have been working this one for a couple years.
  4. In the Drink. Surge in booze consumption.
  5. The Debt Business.  www.iapda.org. Most of the legit ones belong to this organization and don't take up front fees.
  6. Mortgage & Foreclosure Rescue Companies. There are tons of the real thing, however  the Federal Trade Commission last year sued five bogus foreclosure rescue companies that together represented 20,000 customers. The real ones don't ask for payment in advance.
  7. Repairing Instead of Replacing. Ask your auto dealer how his Service Department is doing.
  8. Repo Men. Up 80% over previous year.
  9. Thrift National Association for Resale & Thrift Shops. www.narts.org

Here's the complete story in Business Week.

Glimmer or Glitch

According the Department of Commerce they reported a 1% increase in non-auto retail sales in January versus December, but a 27% drop from the prior January. All agree that this is a statistical glitch. Don't hang your hat on the number because the following month's number will most probably be down. If we have a trail of 3 to 4 months - now that might be another story. I'm sure you'll find that the average retailer isn't feeling that increase. It also says that retail sales in January didn't fall by a huge percentage point. Here's the New York Times interpretation of the stat.

Hobby Farms

Google the words "Hobby Farms" and look at the flood of links. It's a new rage. It's a movement wherein city folks buy up small parcels of rural land to farm themselves and consume the products themselves and/or sell at Farmer's Markets. Places for more info:

Is There a Reason Valentine’s Day is Preceded by Friday the 13th? Hmmm.
