During the past few days I have been going back and forth about what to write in my newsletter and blog as I welcomed in 2009. One subject that always resonates with me is failure. Too often I encounter people who view themselves as failures in life. People like you and me who happen to believe they have failed too many times to ever achieve success. Well…guess what? I too have been called a failure many times. However, I have chosen to keep my focus pointed forward and not worry what others think about my life accomplishments. Why? We all measure success differently and the more we can remind ourselves of this the better off we will be.
Now…back to the subject of failure. As I sat on the beach enjoying time with my wife and two children this past summer I noticed something I had never paid much attention to in the past. Whether I am busy working on my career or lounging in the sand, failure always seems to be present. That's right…failure is everywhere! Don't worry…this is not meant to be a negative…it is actually very encouraging. You see…without risking failure you will never achieve your full potential. So what does this have to do with the beach you ask? Simple…have you ever tried surfing? :)
Both of my kids enjoy surfing tremendously and have actually become quite good at it. But it has not been this way forever. When they zipped up their wetsuits and headed out into the surf for the very first time they were anything but poetry in motion. In fact, three out of four attempts at catching a wave would end in a big wipeout without ever getting to actually stand up and hang ten. But did this stop them from trying and ultimately finding the right balance to pop up on their surfboard and ride a wave all the way into the beach? No way!! In fact, each failed attempt motivated them even more to keep trying. Now that both kids are able to catch waves with a bit more ease they have set their sites on getting better and possibly even surfing the "big" waves when they get older. Each year they come back to the beach with more confidence having grown a bit taller and become a bit wiser at life. They head out a bit farther in the water to catch bigger waves than the summer before and start the cycle all over again.
Personally and professionally, never stop believing in yourself. Keep dreaming and always reach for the stars. Some of you will get their quicker than others and some may never reach their full potential. All of this is ok since the outcome is not as important as what you learn during the journey in getting there.
As always…to those who have just begun the journey of finding their purpose in life, remember to remain patient. You will find it! For those who have already found it, remain faithful. For the road of life ahead is sure to have unforeseen curves that will attempt to throw us all off course.
