FALL/WINTER 2005

We've Got You Covered

If you need to cover an event for your company newsletter, it's all about the letter W. We're talking about the five W's of basic storytelling: What happened, Where it happened, When it happened, Who was involved, and Why it’s important.

Grapevine Communications recently had the opportunity to cover an event for our client, Jamba Juice, and we did just that.

What & Where: The NBC television show "Three Wishes" came to West Hills, Calif. to fulfill a wish made by third-grader Kathryn Meola. Kathryn's wish: that her good friend and cancer patient Summer Sharaga could experience a white Christmas.

When: On November 12 & 13, Summer's family was sent away for the weekend. The show's crew joined forces with friends and classmates of the girls to work some magic.

Who: "Three Wishes," hosted by Amy Grant, Eric Stromer and Carter Oosterhouse, friends, and Jamba Juice team members Katy Van Bibber and Felicia Berry. The local West Hills Jamba Juice store arrived with free smoothies for the cast, crew and friends to enjoy during a well-deserved break.

Why: "Three Wishes," Jamba Juice and loved ones were able to help transform Summer's house into a winter wonderland, granting a very special wish!

Headache-Free Holiday Tips

The holiday season is traditionally a busy time filled with happiness and good cheer. With celebrations, family gatherings and office parties, it represents the most social time of the year.

However, the holiday party season and the gathering of family during this time can also produce added stress and tension - two key triggers in the onset of headaches. To avoid holiday headaches, the National Headache Foundation (NHF) offers these tips: plan in advance, make lists, stay away from smoke- and perfume-filled rooms, don’t skip meals, avoid last minute shopping and stay on a regular sleep schedule.

HOW TO
Taking Pictures For Use In Print

Great looking newsletters are made up of several components; layout, graphics, content and pictures. Unless someone is in the witness protection program, people love to see pictures of themselves in print. You've written a great story about an employee who has won a prestigious award - you need to include a photo of that employee with the award. But not just any photo, you want a clear, crisp, interesting photo. Here are a few tips for taking a good picture:

1. Hold the camera steady as you take the picture.
2. Make sure your lighting is good. Get the sun behind you or to one side, if it is bright, place people in the shade, and if it is dark in the shade, use the flash.
3. Get close up to whatever you are taking a picture of.
4. Pay attention to the background and keep it simple.
5. If you are using a digital camera remember to take the picture at the highest resolution possible. DPI is the measure of resolution. The greater the dpi number, the higher the resolution. Image should be at least 4"x6" or approximate ratio and 150 dpi or better - preferred and standard for print is 300 dpi.
6. Take more than one picture.

Soup's On

Looking for a sweet gift to give this year? Here's an easy recipe that both young and old can put together quickly and inexpensively.

In a decorative cellophane bag place one package of instant hot chocolate mix, a candy cane and mini marshmallows. Tie it up with a pretty ribbon and print this poem on the gift card:

Snowman Soup
Was told that you've been good this year
Always glad to hear it.
With freezing weather drawing near
You'll need to warm the spirit.
So here's a little Snowman Soup
Complete with stirring stick.
Add hot water; sip it slow
It's sure to do the trick!
