Exercise in the Summer Heat

It's always a challenge to get our dogs the exercise they need when it's in the 90's and triple digits outside. When it comes to walking, here are a few guidlines for outdoor activity;

The best time to walk your dog in the summer is EARLY in the morning. Before you walk your dog be sure to place your bare hand (with your body weight on it) on the surface that they will be walking on, if you cannot comfortably hold your hand there for at least 5 seconds...they cannot walk on it.

Do not put booties on your dog to walk them; if it is too hot for their bare feet to be on the surface, it is too hot to walk them. Booties are good to use for very short distances like from your car into the vets office, groomers or any other SHORT distance that they may need to travel. After the sun goes down, the concrete, asphalt, and even the air are all still hot. Dogs do not sweat like we do and it is much more difficult for them to keep their bodies cool.

If you have access to a pool, teaching your dog to swim is an excellent way to get their daily exercise. And you can use a life vest like Bentley is wearing.

Another very popular and simple thing to do is to teach your dog to walk on a treadmill.

Here's Buddy BearII after a tough workout. If you need help with this, one of us can come out and give you and your dog a treadmill lesson.

Teach your dog the "find it" game with their favorite toy. Here's how...

Ask your dog to sit or down and place their favorite toy five or six feet away from them. Walk back to your dog and with a very excited voice say "Find it!" When they run and get their toy, get down and play with them and celebrate their genius. Do it a few more times and gradually move the toy further away. Then let them see you place the toy just behind a piece of furniture, walk back to them and say "Find it"! And again celebrate their victory. Gradually make it more difficult for them to find it, once they get the hang of it a few hard searches will wear them out.

To Shave or not to Shave...
that is the Question.
Courtney, from Conversations With Courtney, used to love to sun bathe. It could be 110 outside and she'd go out in the yard, lay down and soak it all in. As most of us loving dog moms and dads all I wanted was for her to be happy and enjoy life so I figured that if I shaved her coat down it would make for a much more comfortable summer. The opposite turned out to be true, she had the toughest time that summer, trying to sun bathe. What I learned is that her coat provides a nice insulation layer against the hot rays of the sun, and actually allowed her to be able to be out there longer. What we recommend now is to leave most dogs alone however if you have a dog with a very thick coat, like a chow for example, it may help them to thin the coat by removing as much of the undercoat as possible.
