A malady known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) has decimated commercial and some hobby beekeeping operations across the country, with some beekeepers reporting losses as high as 100 percent. At stake is more than just honey; many important U.S. crops rely on pollination services provided by commercial beekeepers, including apples, almonds, peaches, soybeans, pears, pumpkins, cucumbers, cherries, raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries.

Enterprise Rent-a-Car Promotes Use of Renewable Fuels

Enterprise Rent-A-Car and VeraSun Energy Corp. today announced the first "VE85(TM)/FlexFuel" rental branch location in South Dakota.
The Sioux Falls location is the newest Enterprise branch to receive the E85/FlexFuel designation as part of a nationwide effort to promote the expanded availability and use of E85, a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. Enterprise will commit to fueling its Sioux Falls FlexFuel vehicles with VeraSun's branded E85, VE85(TM).

Administration Analysis Details Impact on USDA Programs without a New Farm Bill

As stated in the USDA analysis, the provisions of the Agricultural Adjustment Act of 1938 and the Agricultural Act of 1949, which have been repeatedly suspended by several farm bills, would again become legally effective if a new farm bill is not enacted or Congress fails to extend the 2002 farm bill by March 15, 2008. Often described as a reversion to "permanent law," such a result would "dramatically narrow the universe of producers who receive support, and would do so in a way that most producers will view as irrational," according to the 14 page paper prepared by USDA and approved by the Office of Management and Budget.
