A picture of me with my daughter, Liam, on my way for a C-Section at HALO's Vet
The following is a letter from Mila, a 1 year old female Chihuahua who arrived at HALO's shelter after being surrendered by her owners at Animal Control, less than an hour before, in labor distress. Mila gave birth to one baby girl on Wednesday, September 23rd, but her next puppy was too big to pass through her birth canal. Her owners did not take her to the vet. They left her this way all night and finally surrendered her to the shelter the next afternoon at 3PM. Animal Control staff immediately called HALO, and we rushed her to our vet. If Mila could speak, we're sure this would be her story:
I'm writing this letter from Heaven, as you see, my life didn't turn out quite as I had planned. I wanted to be a spayed house dog, but my owners wanted me to help pay their bills by making lots of cute babies for them. I was trying my best to comply, but I ran in to some trouble giving birth to my second baby. They told me they didn't have any money to take me to the doctor, so they decided to wait. While they waited, my other three puppies inside me died, and began to make a raging infection in my blood. By the time HALO got me the next day I was horribly sick. I had all but given up hope. I could see HALO wanted to help me, and I wanted to live, I really did, but I just couldn't hold on. I made it through surgery, and lived through the night at HALO's President's house. She fed my babies for me because I was just too weak to even make milk for them or clean them up. The next day, instead of getting better, I was worse, and couldn't hold on, so they helped me find my way to Heaven.
This is me after surgery
I've been watching from up here and have seen that they have found a mother kitty to care for my Liam. I'm so happy to see that at least one of my girls is going to make it and find a great family; one that I had hoped for all along. I just hope this cat cares for my girl like one of her own until the time comes to let her go. I hope my death can serve as a reminder to people that pets are not a cash crop, we are not free or even cheap to care for if you value our health and there are many pups out there like me that need HALO's help. Even though I died, HALO spent over $600 to try and save me. At least my baby girl has made it so far.

Please help support HALO and their mission of Helping Animals Live On. They weren't able to save my life, but I KNEW I was loved while I got my chin scratched all night long in a warm bed by people who know what it means to be a true dog lover.
