I, Liam, Do Solemnly Swear...

....to never chase kitties, to never get "snacks" from the litter box and to always speak highly of kitty cats even around my dog friends!

Liam's eyes are now open as you can see. Liam has become quite a star! Her story was not only captured by Channel 3's Ryan O'Donnell, it has been aired on many other stations, including CNN!

If you missed the news story, click here to watch it.

As you can imagine, she's got quite a fan club interested in adopting her so now we just need to enjoy watching her grow until the time comes for her to leave her kitty friends.

We'll keep the cute pictures coming as she grows since we know everyone likes a good "awwww" in their day!

Honeybun's Horror Turns Around

Honeybun, a Chihuahua mix who's life was in danger when she arrived.

Unfortunately we've seen a trend lately of little dogs in labor distress.  Honeybun's story is much like Mila's story (Liam's mom) only in her case, she survived while her babies did not.

Honeybun was brought in to animal control by one of their officers after being found as a stray. She had given birth to a stillborn puppy in the truck on her ride in to the shelter.

She gave birth to a few more puppies who had also died in the kennel at the shelter.

That story alone is a tragedy beyond words, but Honeybun's life was still very much in danger. At some point during labor, her uterus ruptured.  She was literally dying when we got her.  She was limp and severely dehydrated.  HALO's Animal Care Manager, Kim, saw Honeybun at Animal Control and realized she was living on borrowed time. She raced her to Companion Pet Clinic after getting an IV catheter set to start the hydration process and to get some antibiotics in to her 4 pound body.

It was touch and go for the first 72 hours with Honeybun, but we're proud to say our efforts paid off and she's doing great today.  She is ready for a new family who wants a complete snuggle bug.  She sleeps in bed every night with a 7 year old girl who thinks she is the bee's knees.

"Her Name Was Lola, She Was a Shy Girl..."

Lola, taking a dip in one of our puppy pools at the shelter

Ok, we'll admit, those aren't exactly the lyrics to Barry Manilow's song Copacabana, but that's how she got her name. Sometimes it is difficult to think of a name for one of the 2,500 animals that will come through our doors this year, and we all sing a lot (not very well we might add), so many times names come by way of song, and in Lola's case, well, we've got good old Mr. Manilow to thank for the help.

Lola was on the euthanasia list at Animal Control for being scared of people.  We were able to get Lola to warm up to us and felt she was savable so we took her to our shelter.  When we got her there we discovered she had a bad knee that was causing her pain and may have contributed to her fearful behavior.

Lola's doctors agreed she needed surgery to repair the tear in her knee that would eventually rip completely if we didn't do something. Within a few days of being relaxed at our shelter, Lola was grinning ear to ear, like in her picture at the "spa".  Lola's surgery was $450 but she is worth every cent! She is an amazing girl loaded with affection and good vibes.  She was recently adopted by a fantastic family and is loving life free from pain!
