Ride of Silence

7 PM

On May 19, 2010, at 7:00 PM, the Ride of Silence will begin in North America and roll across the globe. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often are not aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves.

In 2003, Chris Phelan organized the first Ride of Silence in Dallas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and was killed.

The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph and remain silent during the ride. There are no sponsors and no registration fees. The ride, which is held during National Bike Month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for those who have been killed or injured. For more information follow this link...

The ride will start at Mountain View Park at Lindsay & Adobe in Mesa and will head south to Freestone Park & back. Helmets are required as are lights since the ride is partially at night. We will depart at 7:00PM and will ...ride no faster that 10-12mph. All cycling levels are welcome. Last year there were about 75 riders and we hope to help make it more this year.  Join us....

Community Support

We will be out supporting the cycling community like never before this year and are getting spread pretty thin on some weekends, but hey, we like this stuff so why not!   Even as busy as we have been with events we are always looking for more ways to give back and support the cycling community.  So if you are involved with or know of a cycling event that could use some support shoot us an email, we'd be glad to lend a hand any way we can!  We can help out with: bike rodeos, bmx shows, S.A.G. support, tech support, Boy Scout cycling badges, private repair clinics for ride groups, we're even open to lending out our floor space for your cycling related clinics.  This is the way we give back, never a charge.  Let us know what we can help you with?  What would you like us to offer?

 May's Cycling Tips
This site/page shows you real ways you can get hit and real ways to avoid them.

This is a far cry from normal bicycle safety guides, which usually tell you little more than to wear your helmet and to follow the law. But consider this for a moment: Wearing a helmet will do absolutely nothing to prevent you from getting hit by a car. Sure, helmets might help you if you get hit, but your #1 goal should be to avoid getting hit in the first place. Plenty of cyclists are killed by cars even though they were wearing helmets. Ironically, if they had ridden without helmets, yet followed the guidelines listed below, they might still be alive today. Don't fall for the myth that wearing a helmet is the first and last word in biking safety. In truth, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. It's better to not get hit.  So follow the law, wear your helmet, AND learn these tips, that's what real bicycle safety is about. So check out  Bicycle Safe's website and learn more.....http://bicyclesafe.com/

Bike humor

Going Deaf

A tandem rider is stopped by a police car.
"What've I done, officer?" asks the rider.
"Perhaps you didn't notice sir, but your wife fell off your bike half a mile back . . ."
"Oh, thank God for that," says the rider - "I thought I'd gone deaf!"

A Cyclist in Heaven

A very devout cyclist dies and goes to heaven. Saint Peter meets him at the gate. First thing the cyclist askes is if there are bicycles in heaven.

"Sure," says St. Peter, "let me show you," and he leads the guy into the finest Velodrome you can imagine.

"This is great," the cyclist says.

"It certainly is," says St. Peter. "You will have a custom bike and the best cycling clothes you've ever seen, and your personal masseuse will always be  available."

As they speak a blur streaks by them on the boards riding a gold plated Cinelli.

"Wow!" the cyclist exclaims. "That guy was so fast that can only be Eddy Merckx!"

"No," says St. Peter, "that was God on the bike, he only thinks he's Eddy".
