JP's Insight Mr. JP Dahdah President Entrust Arizona I frequently get asked what type of assets I invest in. I assume that people's curiosity stems from the fact that I spend every day of my professional life educating others about the benefits of taking control of their retirement and truly diversifying their portfolios within alternative assets. Well, just to set the record straight, I do practice what I preach. I self-direct my retirement plan primarily into private companies. Private company investing provides the level of access to information and management I demand from my investments. I'm an investment control freak, remember! It is very difficult for me to feel comfortable about where my savings are invested if I can't speak directly to the President of the company to understand their strategy and to have direct access to important financial and operational data. I also have the ability to maximize the growth potential of a company from the earliest stage of the venture. With stock market based investments, even initial public offerings, investors lose the largest percentage of the upside because they have to wait until the shares are being offered for sale to the public. The investors that gain the most return are the ones that are there from the very beginning. I currently own an interest in the following private companies and sectors: 1) private bank stock (financial) 2) video streaming company (technology) 3) domain holding company (media) 4) burrito company (consumer goods) 5) auto insurance claims software company (technology), just to name a few. Is private company investing risky? Yes it is, but I currently have time on my side and feel comfortable with the risk/reward proposition since I am more than 25 years away from retirement. I believe the next "bull market" will be driven by small companies that offer innovative solutions to our current problems. In the late 90's, Google, Ebay and Amazon revolutionized the internet and a technology boom emerged. Now we have companies such as Facebook and Twitter transforming how we communicate socially. All of these brands emerged from private capital investors like you and I. Just think about what your self-directed IRA account balance would be today, if you were one of the original investors in those companies.
