President's Message
Greetings SWPA Member,

November has been a historical month nationally and regionally. The United States saw a historic battle for the presidency with an African-American presidential candidate and a female vice presidential candidate. The election of Barack Obama as the first African-American president of the United States is something most of us won't ever forget. On a more regional stage, the Southwest Parking Association had a record number of members vote to fill the four empty board seats on next year's SWPA Board of Directors with over 60 members voting. See the Member News section for your 2009-2010 Board.

We welcome our new and old board members and wish them luck next year in steering the organization. We also say goodbye and thanks to two board members and longtime leaders of SWPA who will not serve next year. Our current past-president Ray Humbert, who stepped in when Jim Sayre moved to Iowa and Director Linda Riegel will not be serving on next year's board. We send them many thanks; their involvement in SWPA has been invaluable. As many of you know, Jim Sayre has moved to the University of Iowa and survived what Mother Nature threw at him this summer.

One of SWPA's founding members has decided that it is time to stop working and enjoy retirement! Warren Reynolds retired this October from Pima County and will be missed as a leader by both the International Parking Institute and the Southwest Parking Association. In recognition of Warren's contributions to the establishment and continued success of SWPA, the board has recently changed the name of its scholarship program to the Warren Reynolds Scholarship Fund. The program was established to encourage professional development within the parking industry. To support this goal, the association will give financial assistance each year to SWPA members attending a parking conference, training workshop or seminar. Preference is given to events sponsored by SWPA and the International Parking Institute (IPI).

SWPA holds an annual golf tournament each spring to raise funds to help provide financial support to the Warren Reynolds Scholarship Fund. The 3rd Annual Warren Reynolds Scholarship Fund Golf Classic will be held April 16, 2009, at the Ocotillo Golf Resort in Chandler, Arizona. More information on sponsorships and registration will be announced after the New Year.

SWPA also participates in IPI's Emerging Leader Scholarship Program to send first-time attendees to the annual IPI conference. Albert Gonzalez from ASU's Polytechnic campus attended the IPI conference in Dallas last year as the SWPA recipient of this scholarship. In support of IPI's mission with this newly established program, SWPA also awarded a scholarship to Laura Wilburn from the University of Arizona. Be on the lookout for scholarship opportunities in future SWPA newsletters, on the SWPA website and from IPI.

In closing, I would like to thank our current president and next year's past-president Tad MacDowell for his leadership and commitment to the association this year. I look forward to serving all of you next year and hope to see you in Reno, Nevada, Sept. 28 – Oct. 2, 2009, at the Silver Legacy Resort!

Parking costs have risen nationwide for the fifth year in a row, according to the eighth annual Parking Rate survey being released today from Colliers International, a leading global real estate services company. The survey was conducted in June and covered a broad selection of 64 metro areas in North America. The price increases found in this year's report mirror last year's pattern, as parking owners and operators continue to feel bullish, reflecting limited supply in many U.S. markets.

The median monthly parking rate is now $153.79 in the United States. Rates range from a high of $750.00 in midtown Manhattan to a low of $20.00 in Memphis, Tennessee. Daily parking rates, as noted, rose 4.3 percent in the U.S. The median rate for daily parking is now $15.42.

Visa Certifies ZipPark's z-Control as a Validated Payment Application

As a parking professional you are well aware of the importance of security, revenue control, and protection of sensitive credit card data.

On October 15, 2008, Visa announced ZipPark's flagship revenue control product, zControl, as a Visa PABP-validated payment application. zControl is now the only valet and gateless revenue control system that meets the needs of your PCI compliance efforts. As a validated application, ZipPark's software meets or exceeds the card industry standards for securely maintaining the integrity of credit card information. zControl also meets stringent requirements for password strength and secure accessibility.

ZipPark's President and Founder, Barry Lazowski, states "ZipPark's commitment to leading the gateless industry made it an easy decision to pursue validation with Visa. ZipPark will continue to tackle industry challenges head-on to address the needs of our clients, our users, and the industry as a whole."

ZipPark's software was designed to automate the manual processes that are commonly used in the parking industry. ZipPark's system takes control away from attendants and empowers management with the ability to minimize theft. zControl manages vehicle tracking, monitors employee efficiently and improves the overall customer experience. zControl automates the valet process providing real time reporting with the information necessary to maximize the success of your operation.

ZipPark specializes in providing a user definable interface that offers a custom fit to the individual needs of your operation. ZipPark also integrates with SKIDATA and Federal APD. Now more than ever with Visa's validation, ZipPark's zControl software is securely equipped and designed to improve your valet and gateless operations.
