Bills on the Move

The Chamber has a number of issues moving through the legislative process. The unemployment insurance omnibus bill (HB 2519) and workers’ compensation omnibus bill (HB 2368) cleared the House Banking and Insurance Committee on Monday, February 6th and are ready for House floor votes. The bills continue to move through the process. For more information on these bills and others, please visit our new Public Affairs website by clicking here. All policy positions are established through careful evaluation against the Chamber’s 2012 Guiding Principles.

Mayor’s State of the City Address & Luncheon is April 11

New Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton will deliver his first “State of the City” address at a special luncheon event on Wednesday, April 11 at the Phoenix Convention Center. Stanton, who succeeded Phil Gordon and became the city’s 52nd mayor in January, will look ahead to the opportunities and challenges facing his administration, Phoenix residents and the business community. This event runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Click here to register.

GPCCTV: Phoenix City Councilman Daniel Valenzuela

Mayor Stanton isn’t the only new face in Phoenix leadership. City Councilman Daniel Valenzuela is in his first term representing District 5, which includes west and central Phoenix. Councilman Valenzuela recently spoke with GPCCTV about his plans for economic development in his district and how the Chamber can help local businesses succeed. Click here to see the video.

Flight Plan: Help Luke Air Force Base

Luke Air Force Base is one of our state’s points of pride. The West Valley-based installation is an economic engine generating $2.17 billion annually for Arizona’s economy through the purchase of local goods and services. A new opportunity to bring the F-35 fighter jet program to Luke is now before us. The Air Force is kicking off an environmental impact study and seeking support from the community. With great potential to create demand for labor and supplies, this program could provide a significant boost to our economy. To show your support for this program and the efforts to locate it here in the Valley, please click here.

Doing Business with the City of Phoenix

Last fall, the Greater Phoenix Chamber, the City of Phoenix and other business organizations began looking at ways to improve the city’s procurement process with the goal of creating a more business-friendly environment atop a world class procurement structure. As many of you responded to their survey in December, the city received feedback from more than 400 participants on what is working and what needs improvement. To show they are listening, the City will be hosting workshops for businesses to learn how to get involved in the procurement process, talk about improvements and get your feedback. Workshops will be held at the Burton Barr Library in the Pulliam Auditorium on Tuesday, April 10 from 4 – 6 p.m.; Thursday, April 12 from 4 – 6 p.m.; Tuesday, April 24 from 8:30 – 10:30 a.m. and Friday, April 27 from 8:30 – 10:30 a.m. For more details, contact Amy Bratt at abratt@phoenixchamber.com.
