Ugly Dogs Unleashed on Tempe's Madcap Theater

World’s Ugliest Dog Documentary Partners with HALO Animal Rescue to Raise Funds for Homeless Animals

Finally, after screenings in San Francisco, Berkeley and Sacramento (and winning the Best Documentary Award at the Kansas City Film Festival), “Worst in Show” arrives in Phoenix for a furry fundraiser for HALO Animal Rescue.

Every summer, dozens of gnarly mutts face off at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, to decide who takes home the title of World's Ugliest Dog. After the showdown, the winner's mug is plastered on websites worldwide thanks to the Associated Press, the BBC and “The Today Show.”

Award-winning Bay Area documentary filmmakers John Beck and Don R. Lewis go behind the scenes to meet the obsessive owners and their Chinese Crested hairless purebreds, one-eyed rescue dogs and boxers with nasty underbites. Along the way, they uncover the fiercely competitive underworld of the ugly dog circuit leading up to the finals.

But what starts out as an absurd proposition - essentially an "ugly pageant" - evolves into a heartwarming rescue dog story. Along the way, you’ll meet past champions, travel to a doggie dude ranch in Santa Barbara and witness Jane Russell’s final screen appearance.   Watch the trailer at www.worstinshowmovie.com.

Come out and support HALO by seeing a funny and heartwarming film about the inner beauty of rescued dogs.  ½ of the night’s proceeds are going to the animals at HALO!

Ugly Dog Contest to be held before the show!

7 p.m. Saturday, June 11 at the Madcap Theater, 730 South Mill Ave.

Adopt A Shelter Cat Month - Waived Cat Adoption Fees!

HALO Animal Rescue Prepares for a Feline Frenzy …

June is Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat Month; and with only 22% of owned cats in the U.S. coming from shelters, we are hoping to entice potential adopters with a purrfect cat adoption special.

Beginning June 6 and running through June 12, adoption fees will be waived for all felines ages 1 year and older.  Pet parents will be encouraged to make a donation to HALO on behalf of their newly adopted feline family member.  The no-kill shelter spends approximately $345 on each animal in their care.

While this special takes place for just one week, HALO is also offering reduced cat and kitten adoption fees throughout the entire summer.  From June through August, cats 1 year and older will be available for $50 (this excludes the week of June 6 -12, when there will be no adoption fee for cats 1 year and older) and kittens (under 1 year of age) will be available for $110.

In addition to the shelter at 5231 North 35th Avenue in Phoenix, HALO has adoptable cats at the following locations:

PetSmart Luv-A-Pet Adoption Centers:

1949 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix

Be an Angel for the Animals

The HALO Angel Club

Here's the deal.  About 100,000 animals enter the shelters in Maricopa County each year.  Approximately half of them leave alive.

The other half are euthanized.  This is the group of animals that we focus on saving.  We take animals in danger of euthanasia at the Humane Society and at Maricopa County Animal Care and Control, give them love, care, and medical treatment, and then find them loving forever homes.

Our resources are limited to pay for their necessary vaccinations, antibiotics, spay/neuter surgeries, etc., so we can only save as many dogs and cats as we can afford.  With support from our fellow animal lovers, we can afford to save more lives.

For as little as $10 per month, you can help us rescue more than 2,500 homeless, abandoned, injured, and sick animals every year.  With automatic monthly donations to HALO Animal Rescue, you will provide steady support for the animals who we’ve saved from the danger of euthanasia, in a way that is most convenient for you.

Join at the $25 per month level and receive a free t-shirt so you can show your HALO pride wherever you go!
